People often ask me about the process that goes into creating one of my door knockers or other specialty pieces. So here's my answer.... | |||||
| I start with my own idea, or someone sends me their idea on commission, and the first thing I do is sketch it on paper, trying to visualize how the sculpture is going to look.... |  | ||||
 | Then I make a three-dimensional model of the sculpture either out of modeling clay.... | ||||
| ...or I make a mold out of one of my original sculptures to reproduce in bronze. |  | ||||
| Next I paint several layers of latex mold compound on the model. | ||||
| After the latex hardens I remove it from the mold. |  | ||||
 | I then paint hot wax into the latex mold to make sure I pick up all the details possible, and then fill the mold with melted wax. | ||||
| When the wax has fully hardened, I remove the wax from the mold, and now I have a duplicate of the model, but in wax. |  | ||||
| And finally, using precision carving tools and magnification, I refine the wax to bring out the intricate details of the piece. | |||||

When this step is completed, I take my piece to the foundry to be cast in bronze. In my case, I use Skurja Art Castings in Prescott, Arizona for all my bronze work.
